The Transformation of the Interpretation Paradigm of "Baihong Guanri" in Han and Tang Dynasties and Its Cultural Memory
Zhang Yue(University of Macau)
Abstract There were several paradigm shifts in the reading of "Baihong Guanri" (white rainbow penetrating the sun 白虹贯日). It was interpreted as a natural celestial phenomenon by our ancestors, a political taboo in the Warring State period, an ethical innuendo in the Han dynasty, a political chaos and foreshadow of war during the Six dynasties period, and a poetic elucidation in the Tang dynasty. The shifts reflected the cultural memory and literary characteristics of each historical period, which generated different cultural interpretations, gradually correlated with the widespread story of Jing Ke's attempt of assassinating the King of Qin. In Tang poetry, Jing Ke's attempted assassination and "Baihong Guanri" became the main symbols of "the youthful spirit" of High Tang culture in the sincerity of vengeance and lofty sentiments and aspirations. However, the Tang dynasty went downhill after the An Lushan-Shi Siming rebellion, and "Baihong Guanri" became taboo once again.
Key words Baihong Guanri; Jing Ke's attempted assassination of the King of Qin; youthful spirit;ethical reading; poetic interpretation
