A Reflection of the Disciplinary Status and Course Attributes Of College Chinese
Zhang Fugui (Jinlin University)
Abstract In the evolution of college disciplines in China, College Chinese, has progressed from the Chinese Language Course for Freshmen in the Republic of China to a current course in contemporary universities, playing a relatively special role in the history of Chinese language and literature education. Despite its long course of establishment and age-old existence, the immature disciplinarity, uncertain status, and vague attributes of college Chinese are rarely seen in other subjects or majors. This is mainly due to the fact that disciplines and majors are overly subdivided in higher education and their values tend to be excessively utilitarian. An in-depth study of the aesthetic, informative and practical issues of college Chinese stands as an important sign of its maturity as a discipline. Apart from being theoretical, research of this kind should also be practical and even institutional. Instead of being a course belonging to pedagogy or the major of teaching methodology, college Chinese should be a comprehensive sub-discipline of the Chinese language and literature with attributes of a public course.
Key words college Chinese; higher education; Chinese language education; public course; disciplinary attribute
